Corporate Welfare for Stan Kroenke? Urge Your Legislators to Support Reform
Special taxing districts like Community Improvement Districts and Transportation Development Districts are another form of corporate welfare. Many Missourians may not be aware they are costing them more money each time they shop at certain locations. These special taxing districts allow special interests to tax the public for their own private gain. One of the most recent examples of abuse is a special taxing district created in Wentzville in St. Charles County for the benefit of a politically-connected billionaire Stan Kroenke, the owner of the Rams. Stan Kroenke is perhaps best known for relocating the former St. Louis Rams to Los Angeles.
St. Charles County officials like County Executive Steve Ehlmann are working to shine the light on these corporate welfare handouts so the citizens paying more to shop know exactly how much they are paying and who stands to benefit. County Executive Ehlmann called the idea of giving millions to Stan Kroenke to develop one shopping center over another “silliness” and urged the state legislature to act to reform this broken system.
Missouri taxpayers should not come second to politically-connected billionaires who abuse special taxing districts for profit. It is past time for the Missouri legislature to pass significant reforms of CIDs and TDDs in the 2020 legislative session.
The legislature could use the savings from reforming TDDs and CIDs to help ordinary Missourians by lowering their tax burden, building transportation infrastructure and enacting other priorities that benefit all Missourians. This should be a priority over allowing government programs to be a windfall for billionaires like Stan Kroenke.
We encourage you to thank St. Charles County Executive Steve Ehlmann for supporting reform of special taxing districts. We also urge to you call or write your state representative and state senator and urge them to support reform of special taxing districts during the 2020 legislative session. Tell them we need tax reform for Missourians, not windfalls for politically-connected billionaires like Stan Kroenke.
